Risky Business #138 -- Dan Geer on the future of computing
Risky Business is back for 2010!
On this week's program we chat with information security legend Dan Geer.
Dan's the Chief Information Security Officer for In-Q-Tel, which is, in essence, the technology investment arm of the CIA. He's not appearing in Risky Business is his capacity as an In-Q-Tel employee, however, he joins us as a veteran of the information security industry.
Dan helped create Kerberos during his tie with project Athena at MIT and was the chief technology officer at @Stake for a time.
Yeah I did forget to take out the f-bombs last week.
I asked the guy who I'd mentioned if it was public that he's working for Google. It's not, so I had to bleep it.
Hey Pat why censor the podcasts?
Reckon it's much better (and easier to follow) without the fucking bleeps.
Because it annoys me when people drop the f-bomb because the think it makes them sound cool. It's sophomoric, and wayyyy to common in infosec podcasts.
But yeah, I'm considering phasing out the bleeps. You're all grown ups, after all.

I like to be able to listen to the podcasts out loud, when I'm doing other stuff. The prospect of swearing means I can't. I have to be careful of the little people hearing naughty words.
I actually think the best approach is the removal of the offending word, with no replacement. IE instead of a beep, just a millisecond silence. Its not even noticeable, which is the main point of the exercise.
And in that case, apologies for missing a couple this year.
That's a good enough reason for me. I will keep the beeps though -- silence is actually pretty confusing.
I generally don't censor "shit"... just f--- and up.
